Three Hitachi Rail trains win Japan’s prestigious Good Design Award

  • Award recognises quality of design used on three different Hitachi fleets: JR Central’s N700S Shinkansen bullet trains, the Tokyo Metro and Taiwan’s Intercity services
  • Good Design Award is Japan’s leading design award, focused on recognising excellent designs that facilitate industrial development and enriching lives
  • Award-winning trains praised as fast, comfortable, and environmentally friendly as well as featuring excellent exterior and interior design

Hitachi Rail has been awarded three Good Design Awards 2021 by Japan’s Institute of Design Promotion for the innovative design and delivery of modern trains across three different rail services.

Specifically, the award has recognised the quality of design of Hitachi Rail’s trains:

  1. N700S Shinkansen bullet train run by the Central Japan Railway Company;
  2. Series 18000 subway train run by on Tokyo Metro’s Hanzomon Line;
  3. EMU3000 Intercity train run by the Taiwan Railways Administration, MOTC.

The Award, is Japan’s most prized design award and is considered a great accolade in a country for that takes design very seriously, has been running for over 50 years. It focuses on recognising excellent designs that simultaneously enrich lives and contribute to economic development.

As part of these awards, the Institute of Design Promotion recognises Hitachi Rail’s continued commitment to delivering trains that are quiet, comfortable, environmentally friendly and appeal to passengers, as a result of their excellent internal and exterior design.

The electric-powered EMU3000 intercity train that runs in Taiwan has also been selected for the Good Design ‘Best 100’ category.
