For the first time since the Metrorail system opened its doors to passengers back in 1984, the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) placed its first new train into service today – ushering in a new era of modern, high tech trains manufactured by Hitachi Rail Italy that will improve both service reliability and overall riding experience.
The first of a seventy strong fleet of fully fitted electric trains is set to arrive in Scotland later this week as passenger service moves another step closer.

Today (12th October 2017), Hitachi unveiled the first new commuter trains for Scotland, built in its Newton Aycliffe factory, in County Durham.
The Class 385 train will run between Edinburgh and Glasgow offering faster journeys, more seats and better services for passengers.

APTA is an important opportunity for the rail sector involving manufacturers, suppliers and experts from all over the world. Focus for the two companies will be on products destined for the American market, including the new metro for Baltimore.
Hitachi Rail Italy and Ansaldo STS – since 2015 part of the Hitachi Group – will participate to the exhibition with a joint booth in which they will present their technology and their innovation that places them among the main players of the sector. Hitachi Rail Italy and Trenitalia have invited the associations of disabled persons and consumers to Pistoia to show them in advance the real scale mock-up of the new Rock regional train and meet with Hitachi’s and Trenitalia's designers and technicians. The mock-up of the train will be the protagonist of the road show that from next October will present it in the main Italian squares.
