Hitachi Rail to modernise telecommunications and passenger information systems on the important commuter Cascais Line in Lisbon
- Hitachi Rail contracted by Infraestruturas de Portugal to upgrade both the telecommunications and passenger information systems on the Cascais Line

Hitachi Rail has been awarded two new contracts to deliver its telecommunications and passenger information systems solutions on the Cascais Line, one of Lisbon’s busiest commuter routes.
Hitachi Rail, alongside partners SISINT and Conecticabo, will implement a fully automated Passenger Information System (SIP), designed to provide real-time updates on train operations. This project expands SIP coverage to all stations on the line, ensuring a seamless, efficient, and transparent experience for passengers. The new technology will also support multimedia formats, making it adaptable for future innovations in passenger communication.
Hitachi Rail was also contracted to renew the telematics systems of the Cascais Line. The data network, time information, energy and SCADA systems will be revamped as part of this project that was kicked-off during Q4 2024.
The award of the latest two contracts underscores Hitachi Rail’s commitment to advancing Portugal’s railway infrastructure. The company’s expertise in managing brownfield projects and introducing innovative solutions, while ensuring the reliability and safety of railway operations is at the forefront of this modernisation of the Cascais Line.
Hitachi Rail's success on the Cascais Line builds on a legacy of achievements in the Portuguese rail sector, which dates back to the early 1990s. Collaborating with Infraestruturas de Portugal, Hitachi Rail has implemented advanced signalling and telecommunications systems, passenger information solutions, and key operational infrastructure such as the Lisbon Operational Control Centre, which currently manages 70% of Portuguese rail traffic.
Hitachi Rail was also instrumental in pioneering the adoption of ETCS Level 2 signalling in Portugal, first on international corridors and later on the Cascais Line. These milestones affirm Hitachi Rail’s role as a trusted partner in the modernisation of the national railway system.

This achievement on the Cascais Line is the latest in a series of successful public tenders for telematics. Hitachi Rail has been previously contracted for the deployment of advanced telecommunications solutions for the Sines, Évora, and Beira Alta Lines, further consolidating its position as an experienced, supplier-agnostic telecommunications integrator.
