Hitachi Rail Italy is Awarded a Contract for the Supply of New Double Deck Regional Trains
Value of contract approximately 2.6 billion Euros for 300 trains.
Naples, Italy, June 29, 2016--- Hitachi Rail Italy S.p.A. (Hitachi Rail Italy) today announced that it was awarded a contract by Trenitalia to build 39 trains with 5 cars each, worth 333 million Euros. The contract award is part of a framework agreement to build up to 300 regional trains, for a total amount of approximately 2.6 billion Euros. The new fleet will operate across the Italian regional network of over 16,000 km.
The train, built by Hitachi Rail Italy, is called Caravaggio and will become the flagship of the new Italian regional train fleet.
Caravaggio is in fact the new frontier of technology, design and safety when it comes to rail transport.
Made up of 5 cars, 136 meters long and 2.8 wide, Hitachi Rail Italy's new regional train has a total capacity of 656 passengers, (the sector range top), and boasts four motor bogies which allow it to reach a speed of 160 km/h, with an acceleration greater than 1 m/sec2.
The design is entirely made in Italy. The new trains provide an updated passenger environment with ergonomic, ecofriendly leather seats, a new arrangement which allows for better use of space and a style completely different from what has been seen so far.
The trains will be produced in Hitachi Rail Italy's three factories in Pistoia, Naples and Reggio Calabria, Italy.
"This new award confirms Hitachi's outstanding quality levels - says Alistair Dormer, Global CEO of Hitachi Rail - and I am particularly proud of the Italian team. Caravaggio will become an icon of regional transport as it is a vehicle that can fully respond to the needs of the customer and passengers".
"With Caravaggio we transport the future into the present - emphasizes Maurizio Manfellotto, CEO of Hitachi Rail Italy - presenting a product that is unique in its category and that sets Hitachi apart from its competitors."
