EMR launches competition to name new intercity fleet

• Public asked to suggest a name for the entire fleet of new bi-mode trains
• Entries must reflect train heritage, history of East Midlands or technological advancement
• Complete the form on the EMR website to make your suggestion by Friday, 26th June

The new Hitachi trains, which draw on Japanese bullet train technology, are quieter and greener, meaning lower carbon emissions and a better environment for passengers, stations, and communities along the route.

They have the ability to run using the new overhead electric lines, taking advantage of the £1.5 billion Midland Main Line upgrade or under diesel power where overhead lines are not in place.

The 33 new trains are set to be built in Hitachi’s factory in the North East, using parts from suppliers around the UK. The Class 810, as they are categorised in the rail industry, are due to enter service in 2022 and will serve the towns and cities on the Midland Main Line.

But before they take to the tracks, EMR is asking people from the communities they will serve to be part of the excitement and name the new state-of-the-art fleet.

The name must reflect the railway heritage in the region or showcase the character and pride of the people within the East Midlands. While another option is to choose a name that highlights the innovative features, such as their ability to switch seamlessly between different power sources or its sleek modern design.

Rachel Turner, Head of New Trains at East Midlands Railway, said she was looking forward to seeing what people suggest.

She said: “Everyone at EMR is excited about the introduction of our new state-of-the-art bi-mode trains. They will enable us to provide our passengers with quicker and more comfortable journeys between the East Midlands and London.

“But before they come into service, we need help from the public to name them. We are keen that the name reflects the proud railway heritage that is so strong in this region. But as well as highlighting the special history of East Midlands, we are also looking for a name which showcases the advanced technological side of the trains. If you have any ideas please take part.”

Jim Brewin, UK Country Lead of Hitachi Rail, said: “Hitachi is delighted to be building new trains for EMR passengers. Although officially designated the ‘Class 810’. I’m excited to see the people of the East Midlands and beyond being challenged to come up with a new name for the fleet, which is set to transform journeys up and down the route when they come into service in 2022.”
